GWRRA Wisconsin Chapter G

http://www.gwrra-wig.org/

Welcome Friends!!!!

Welcome to the Internet home of the Gold Wing Road Rider's Association (GWRRA) Wisconsin Chapter G, also known as "The Greater Milwaukee Wings!"  We are a family organization based in the metropolitan Milwaukee Area. We have been in existence since 1983 and we are the largest GWRRA chapter in the state of Wisconsin. Besides our love of Gold Wings, we love to have fun.  You will commonly see our members riding together and doing non-motorcycling events.  We enjoy meeting new people and we accept new members with open arms.  If you have a technical question, most likely someone in our group will be able to assist.  Our activities range from safety fairs, weekend camping/hotel trips, winter getaways to fight those winter non-biking blues, hockey games, fundraisers, dinner rides, and the list goes on and on.  So, put down the kickstand and take a ride through our pages.  If you happen to be in the neighborhood on a social night, stop in, we'd love to see you.

SOCIALS

Monthly social are generally held on the fourth Sunday of the month.  It's best to refer to the Events page for specific dates and times.

THANK YOU

A special Thank You from one of our dear members.

May is Motorcycle Safety Month, as you probably know. You’ll be seeing the annual abundance of messages alerting drivers of motorcycles on the road and asking their awareness and to give motorcycles their due on the road. It is especially important now that we do our part to cut down on motorcycle/four wheel vehicle accidents since drivers are now more distracted than ever. The latest statistic I read was that 28% of two wheel/four wheel accidents were motorcycles hitting the other vehicle in the side. How many of you ride perpendicular to the cars around you? I didn’t think so. Cars keep turning left in front of us, then say, “I never saw the bike.”

That’s alarming. Some other statistics are alarming too. Try these (2011 numbers are not out yet):

• The number of motorcyclists wearing DOT approved helmets dropped from 67% in 2009 to 54% in 2010. Motorcycle registrations were up and maybe some of the new registrants were not helmet wearers. I don’t know. I do know that no matter how big your bike and how small the car, in an accident, we lose. I don’t even want to get hit by a Topolino.

• Statistics show helmets to be 37% effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle riders and 41% for motorcycle passengers. Helmets may not make you a safer rider. They do help you ride again if you’re involved in an incident.

• Fatalities in 2010 were 2% greater than 2009. We’d like it substantially lower, but that is a significant drop from 2008 which was 16% greater than 2009.

• More than one-third of fatal motorcycle crashes in 2009 involved drivers with blood alcohol levels of .01 or higher. Nearly 30% had a BAC of .08 or higher.

• Here is another statistic. It doesn’t matter who’s at fault or how much the driver has been drinking . . . we still lose.

• In Wisconsin, the number of motorcycle fatalities increased from 2009 to 2010 by 32% and in most cases involving another vehicle, the four wheeler was at fault.

To kick off Motorcycle Safety Month and get us all thinking defensively, Chapter G is hosting our annual Safety Fair on May 5 at Action Power Sports in Waukesha. It starts at 10am. Please join us. The details are in the Events Section of our website.

Don’t forget about Dust Off on May 18 and 19 in Glenbulah, WI. It’s the Wisconsin District event of spring and is always fun. Hope you can make it. All the details are on the Chapter website.

The upcoming Chapter Social is on May 20. We look forward to seeing you there. It’s scheduled to be at WaterStone Bank. Keep your eye on the website. That may change to a ride oriented Social away from the Bank Community Room.

Lastly, thanks to all who participated in the Chapter G Brat Fry fund raiser for Making Stride Against Breast Cancer on April 7. The Chapter staff can’t say thanks enough to the members who made it overwhelmingly successful. We appreciate members from other chapters stopping by and to Pick and Save for grill for the cause.

Best to all and ride safe,

Dick Choyke
Chapter G Assistant Director
